We have invited a panel of multidisciplinary experts to inform us about different aspects of Jibaro-Taino ethnohistorical and cultural survival in Puerto Rico, including: anthropogenic alteration of spaces and landscapes; the process of Jibaroization through Euro-indigenous syncretism; Jibaro occupation over indigenous components; local point of view (perspective) regarding Jibaro-Taino heritage; and collective memory in the reconstruction of an Jibaro-Taino ethnographic identity. In this forum we will present the results of our biogeocultural study carried out by students of the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras in the municipalities of Yabucoa, Maunabo, Comerio and Cidra.

The forum serves as a base for: (1) discussing the evolution and survival of Jibaro society with strong Taino components, (2) refuting the Taino extermination myth, and (3) voicing our dissatisfaction for the lack of interest, on the part of academic, cultural, and political institutions, regarding the indigenous theme in Puerto Rico.

The fact that there are still people that deny or diminish importance or place in question our Taino heritage, inspires us to continue remembering all that is indigenous as a symbol of our nation – the autochthonous. We want to remember their pre-Columbian world, their history, their spirituality, and their presence in our geographic landscape. All are objects of inguiry for redefining and reaffirming our borikeñidad or Puertoricaness.

Although the forum highlights the Taino presence in our culture, history, geography, literature and biology, we recognize and celebrate the different components that make up our cultural identity. Without these components we would not be Puerto Rican.
